Case study

Problem

Book reviews can easily become a long list of disconnected posts. Book Bites needed a more intentional editorial frame: a current issue, one featured read, shorter recent verdicts, and a clear way to browse the publication and its approach.

Role & approach

I built the site as a small digital publication rather than a generic blog. The layout gives the current book the strongest emphasis, then moves through recent reviews and the editorial principles behind each verdict.

Editorial experience
01Issue landing pagepublication context and featured quote
02Featured reviewcover, rating, summary, and full verdict
03Recent verdictsscannable archive of shorter book notes
04Books + aboutbrowsing and editorial context for readers

Challenges & solutions

Giving one review a clear editorial lead. I made the current read the center of the homepage, pairing the book cover and verdict with the issue’s opening quote and context.

Balancing depth with quick discovery. Recent verdicts use shorter summaries, author and publication metadata, and ratings so readers can scan the archive before choosing what to read in full.

Creating a distinct reading voice. Issue labels, marginalia-inspired language, and restrained navigation make the experience feel like a publication with a point of view instead of a generic content feed.

Outcome

  • A focused editorial homepage for featured and recent book reviews.
  • Clear navigation between reviews, the book archive, and the about page.
  • A publication-style reading experience with concise, scannable verdicts.
